ℑ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
✒frequently asked questions.
§ What is the premise?
The premise is, your character is brought to Depression-era New York as the Marvel Noir series portrays it, a New York poisoned by corruption of all kinds -- gangs, in the media, in the police force... you don't know anything is wrong, you feel as if you've been here all along. Please see this post for a much more in depth overview.
§ But what's REALLY going on?
What's REALLY going on here? Your character might not know anything is wrong (not yet), but there's obviously more to what's going on than they think. You have been brought here by means of magic, but whose magic was it? What do they want you here, and why did they replace your memories?
These are all things that are there for you to investigate, dig deeper into the secrets of this world. Look underneath the underneath, because not everything is what it seems. NPCs will be around to help you -- give you jobs, or information that can help answer some of your questions, or help lead you to answers. But some may hinder you and give you information that will lead you in the opposite direction, so be careful about who you decide to trust. If you do want to recover your memories and get back home, that is.
After all, some of you may be happier this way.
§ Can I apply only for Marvel characters?
No! This game is Panfandom, so any characters from a work of fiction are encouraged! We will only not accept real people, original characters, duplicate characters, or canon-characters that are being brought from another Roleplaying Game.
§ I know nothing of Marvel or DC canon! Can I still play here?
Yes! The world this game takes place in is more like the New York of the 1930's, and less like the convoluted world of normal comic-book canon!
§ Can I apply for a character that's already an NPC?
Some NPCs may be applied for, yes, but please contact the Modstaff with the character you are thinking about, and we can work something out! As it stands, the only ones you cannot apply for are Mephisto, Dr. Strange, Ben Urich, Reed Richards, and Professor Xavier, due to either their high power, or plot significance.
§ What happens if I do take an NPC character?
Well they obviously won't be an NPC then! If an NPC character that is available is taken, then they will be removed from the NPC list, although this will require you to be a bit more involved in the game! If we need your character to drop a hint or provide something, we will provide the information needed, but it will be up to you to play it out! If an NPC character is dropped, obviously, they will resume play as an NPC.
§ What if I want to apply for a big character, like Spider-Man?
This is encouraged! However, if you are interested in applying for Spider-Man, or Daredevil, or a character that you feel may be helpful to aid or hinder other players (mysterious clue-leaving characters like the Riddler, or detective characters like Bruce Wayne or Dick Tracy, etc.) please make sure to contact either of the mods, as there will be quite a bit of information that is pertinent to Spider-Man or any other characters with noir-counterparts being actively played in-game!
§ I am thinking of applying for a Marvel character! Do I have to app their Noir counterpart? How will this work?
If you are applying for a Marvel character, and there is a Noirverse counterpart, their memories will be changed to correspond with this counterpart, so essentially they will become this character. If there is no counter-part, then they will be integrated into the world as if they have always been in the Noir-verse. The same goes for non-Marvel characters, as well! But, Marvel characters as any other will be able to have their memories cracked, so if you apply for movie!Wolverine instead of noir Wolverine, don't worry, you'll get his memories back eventually.
§ If I apply for a Noir character, what do I do about altered memories?
Just put N/A on the altered memories section of the app!
§ How many characters can I app?
Our current character limit is six.
§ Do I need to make a new character journal?
If you have played the character before/currently are playing a character, and have a journal that you wish to keep using (for the paid time/icons/whatever) you are free to do so! Just make sure to keep your games straight!
§ How about alternate versions of characters? If someone apps for Hiro Nakamura, can I apply for his future self?
No.
§ My character is an animal/Robot/Alien/does not look human! What do I do?
They're going to turn human. No turning back, they'll have always been like that, it's magic!
§ No way they can keep their original form?
A character can keep their original form, if they can still pass as something akin to a circus/side-show freak! This includes skin deformities (pointed ears, webbed toes/fingers, scales, fur, even discoloration. A character like, say, Nightcrawler, would be able to remain almost completely intact), and other physical attributes like unusual eye colors, tails (with stipulations), fangs, etc.
§ The character I want to apply for is dead in this universe. Can I still play them?
YES! If a character who was killed in one of the noir-stories is applied for, the appropriate memories will be altered, and it will be as if they never left!
§ Why do I need to re-write my character's memories?
You'll be re-writing your character's memories for a variety of reasons. The first is that while these are canon characters, they will have a new lifestyle and setting. They will not know their memories have been altered, and so to make sure that they are streamlined into the world, someone is writing over their memories! Also, this way we can integrate your character into the world, and give them the position and things that they need to make it in New York. Once they have introduced themselves to the city, the memories are there to stay.
§ What if my character's memories are important to them staying THAT CHARACTER? What if I WANT to play them with their memories?
They will get them back eventually, first of all. Second of all, that is a perfectly valid point-of-view, which is why in the application there is the option to state how different you want the new memories to be. They could, for instance, be almost exactly the same, only altered to be period appropriate and that all that would entail. But if you have additional problems with this premise, speak to us.
§ My character has special abilities, what does that mean?
If your character canonically has special abilities, they will not be able to use them here at first. Your character will not be aware of their abilities, and therefore will not be able to use them, unless they figure out a way...
§ What if my character's ability is passive?
If your character has a passive ability, then it will work, but your character will not notice it until it has had a chance to actually do something. This will be up to you, but please be cautious about revealing this! Remember, if your character has something like a healing-factor, they will be that much harder to kill, and that might work against them.
§ What is the year here?
It is currently 1935, approximately two years after the events in Spider-man Noir.
§ Where can my character live?
Anywhere in New York state!
§ I've seen it mentioned a few times. Where/what is Gotham, here?
For the purpose of this game and to pay tribute to Gotham Noir, Gotham is another neighborhood in the city.
§ Will my applying for/playing an African American character be a problem?
No! While historically, segregation may have kept your character from going certain places, we won't be enforcing that. It wouldn't be fair, and to be honest, it would be a bit to difficult to find a proper balance with. If you want to play through the struggle with segregation, you may. We're just not going to keep an eye out for it. But please, check with other players first.
§ How about a gay character?
In 1935 (into the early 60s), homosexuals tended to need to hide their sexuality to escape ridicule or, even arrest. Laws were passed against it, and it's at this time it's considered a mental illness. However, there were underground gay and lesbian speakeasies around the Broadway theater and Harlem/Greenwich Village.
§ How do I need to format my logs?
Introspection is the game when you're logging! If you've seen something in a noir-style setting, the key in logging is introspection and action. There are no blacks and whites in this universe, but instead everything is in shades of gray.
However, there is something that we would like to introduce in this RP, and that is the concept of a 'first-person' log. We will not force you to write like this, as it will be very difficult, but as most Noir settings, internal narration is a stand-by, and we would like to introduce it here!
§ And what the [bleep] is a first-person log?
The first-person log is, essentially, a log in this format:
Basically, you write it exactly like you would a third-person log, just in first-person perspective. Why? Well, as said above, it's definitely not required, but a big part of Noir is internal narration from a first person perspective, and thus we think it would be an appropriate and original touch!
§ Characters post in physical books, right? Can I write my entries and then scan them/do them on the computer and post as images?
Yes! However, please put them beneath an LJ-cut so that we can save the browsers of everyone around!
§ How would I log a telephone conversation, or conversation over HAM radio?
There are two options here! You can post it as a log, or you can respond to someone's journal posts with [ Phone Call ] or [ Radio ] in the subject line to have a conversation.
§ How did my character get here?
Your character has always been in this world, or so they think. They may just wake up in their bed one morning, with the unsettling feeling that something is off, but to them, nothing is out of place, and they shrug it off. Some characters are arriving in the city for the first time, and are looking to find their fortune from either a foreign country or the countryside!
§ OK, How did I REALLY get here?
Something, or someone, has pulled your character into this world. Maybe they had a reason, or perhaps it was an accident; but your memories have been altered to prevent the space-time continuum from sending this world to a screeching halt. Who touched your memories? Why, you didn't think we'd tell you that much, did you?
§ What happens when they arrive?
At some point during their first day, they will find a book slipped into their belongings. Your character doesn't know how or why it it is in their things, but when they open it, they are greeted by posts and they are free to reply and converse in these books. They are enchanted, and while there appears to be a finite number of pages, but they are (in reality) infinite. So you will never run out of writing space, and if one tries to tear the pages out, there will always be more.
Your character's name is inscribed on the front of the book, (so if you lose it, someone may find it and return it!) and on the back cover is a small note, in neat, fine handwriting:
To help you along your way.
§ So these books will serve as the journals? Can they record sound?
They're books! Of course they can't record sound! The person who gave you the book may be good, but they're a bit utilitarian, so at this time, your character will not be able to make any kind of voice posts. Video posts are also way out if the question, obviously!
§ Can I get a job? A place to live?
Of course! Your character will have a small apartment to begin with, or even something more elaborate if it is canonically appropriate! Depending on their affiliation, they may also be provided with quarters by the group they've decided to help out. Getting a job is also encouraged, and many of the people you meet may have something to say!
§ What are the different groups?
Your character will find many perks to being affiliated with certain groups around the city! Some may be able to go where others cannot, and some groups will arrange housing or meals for their members. There are many perks to aligning yourself with different groups, some legal, and some illegal.
Ξ Fisk Ξ Fisk is one of the largest crime lords in the city, operating out of Hell's Kitchen. If something needs to be done, Fisk is one of the first men considered. He is a shady wheeler and dealer in everything from slave labor, prostitution, money laundering, and the good old fashioned robbery aren't beyond his eye. Fisk is one of the open heads of a group, however, so Political ties are under the table, and often vehemently denied.
Ξ Osborn Ξ The Goblin was killed, so they say, but his criminal empire still lives on. Osborn surrounded him with men who may have been former members of the same circus. While Osborn was an upstanding citizen, with fingers in everything from government contracts to philanthropy, the Goblin has a criminal empire to rival Fisk's, and since his touch is not so obvious, there are certainly some perks to go along with the job.
Ξ X-Men Ξ This group of outcasts has been blamed for many an arson or murder. These people are considered hoodlums and you won't find many friends if you are an X-man. However, there is an overwhelming sense of family between members, and each X-man will fight to protect the others. Most of the time...
Ξ The Brotherhood Ξ The Brotherhood is a large part of the Police Force. Run by Eric Magus, the Chief of Detectives, he used every method and resource he could to not only achieve his position but also sink his claws into the city. Connections within the Brotherhood are vast, but you will be asked to do some things that you might not find palatable...
Ξ The Police Ξ There is a small minority in the Police that are clean cops. They try their best to uphold the law in the dirty streets, but this is a difficult life. These cops may find themselves scorned or in danger from looking too close into a murder or an arson, so keep your head down, and investigate quietly...
Ξ The Bugle Ξ Members of the media can get into almost anything. Press-Passes are like gold in New York, and your connections will run deep. You may find yourself being forced to fabricate some of your investigative journalism to please the people involved, and if you dig too deeply, the ghosts of the past may rise to haunt you.
§ I haven't read the Noir comics, will this cause problems?
Not at all! The Noir comics will give you a small sense into what kind of world you're stepping into, as well as a good amount of the history referred to in-game, but it is not required to play! We have taken some creative liberties and combined these together into one universe, so while it may give you more references, it will not be required to play!
§ Where CAN I read these comics?
Please contact a mod after you have been accepted, or if you're strongly considering it, and we can help you with that.
§ How often do I need to post/be active?
We would like to see at least two posts a month, two logs a month, or two threads of 15+ comments a month! Activity checks are held at the end of every month, and at this time we are requiring activity within the previous two weeks.
§ So what's this I hear about a mystery?
The mystery is the reasoning behind why your character is in the world to begin with, and what is going to be happening to them. Your characters will be dropped hints, and over time the delicate threads holding the universe may begin to fall apart. Just remember, WHY, and remember that talking to people mayor may not be helpful.
However, be careful, because things are not what they seem.
§ Do we have to solve it ourselves?
You will have assistance, and you will be hindered. Be careful who you trust...
§ Why are some places restricted?
Some locations are restricted because they belong to people! These locations are also hidden, or few people know about them. If you are unaware of a location, how can you go and find it? Many of them have information that may solve some of your questions... but some of it is also right in plain sight.
§ How can I get access to them?
Someone may be perfectly willing to drop a hint or two, some locations are by invitation only, and occasionally you may be led there.
§ This game sounds extremely mod/plot-driven. Do the players have ANY effect on what happens/ability to act on their own?
Of course! The plot is there to make the game interesting -- we don't want a game that's all setting and no substance. While a good deal of thought has gone into making this plot and making it as interactive with the players as possible, but if we didn't want you doing things on your own/interacting with other players/characters/having FUN in the setting/puzzling out the mystery yourself, we'd write a fan-fiction. Think of it as playing a video-game -- you can choose to play the plot (pro-tip: talk to everyone!), or you can just play for the hell of it.
§ How will my character get their memories back?
There are people who will want your character to regain their actual memories, but doing so will take time, and may have unforeseen consequences...
§ My character is dead! What does this mean?
The world may not be one of magic or wizardry as their original universe, but if a character dies, they may come back! You must inform a mod if your character is going to die, so we may direct you on how to bring your character back to life! This will be played out, and Mephisto is always willing to bargain for a soul, or may return your character to life for a price...
But, no. Your characters will not be killed off without your consent.
§ What happens when a character drops?
When a character drops, they are killed off in the world.
§ So what if I want to take a character who has been dropped?
If you take a character that has been dropped, then they will be re-integrated into the world with new memories, as the price for being "returned to life" will be the memories from everything since arriving, including their prior history.
§ Do we HAVE to participate in the plot, or can our characters just live their lives if they're not curious?
Your character can choose to live their life as they see fit! If they aren't the curious sort, they can be blissfully ignorant to anything that may happen, after all, most of the people of New York turn the other direction when something doesn't add up.

The mystery is the reasoning behind why your character is in the world to begin with, and what is going to be happening to them. Your characters will be dropped hints, and over time the delicate threads holding the universe may begin to fall apart. Just remember, WHY, and remember that talking to people may
However, be careful, because things are not what they seem.
